Smaller Whelen's

(Quoted pic : http://www.frostriver.com/tents_tarps/whelen.html)

I love to sleep in the open air near a fire.
It is possible to realize with Whelen's lean-to.
I determine to make a mine.

I think Mr.Whelen was a big man.
The original size is too big to me.
I reduce the scale with a paper model.
The ratio of awning is reduced, too.

I am grappling with a heap of cotton fabric.
It takes two whole days to finish this work.

Detail 1 : eyelets reinforced

Detail 2 : leather awning strings

Detail 3 : total weight
1420g (3.13 lb)

Field installation :
There are lack of place its backside.
The ground sheet is 220cm long.

Its height is 140cm.
8 Velcros are installed for aluminum foil.
A lantern hanger...
Wax coating for waterproof...

It is cozy size to one person.
I'm contented with it.

My props look more ease in this shelter.
:)

Wooden Iphone dock

At nightfall,
I whittle the maple wood
into an oval shape.

And I groove the phone's seat.
There is room enough for speaker sound.

The phone slopes its back slightly.
This phone is fairly smart,
but is short of nature.

On my desk...

Another wooden bowl

I get some Agathis(=Kauri) wood pieces
from my club member.
Agathis wood is very soft,
so it is easy to carve with this wood.

I hollow out with spoon knife and mallet.
Being too seasoned,
it is not shaved but crushed.

Permeating linseed oil into wood,
I carve the basic form of bowl.
Its diameter : 13-15cm
Its weight : 120g

A leash and wooden beads are installed.
I engrave a Chinese character on handle,
a bird drawing on bottom.

The Chinese character '誠'
means the wholeheart,
sincerity, eagerness...

The bird drawing is originated
from the birth myth of Korean nation.
'Sam-Jok-Oh' is a big black bird
that has three legs
and inhabits the sun.

This bird symbolize the bright future
ahead of people.
But, this drawing is very poorly engraved.

Folding grill

Looking Bushtramp's post in BCUSA,
I am aware of its serviceabilty.
Thus I make a mine.

It is made of 2mm thick stainless steel band.
Height : 150mm
Length : 200mm
Width : 12mm

Field test
There are embossings at each bend
for strength.

My canteen cup lid
is working well still.

The merit of this folding grill
is the absence of being.
So fire is more visible.

Waiting the meal,
I sharpen my edge tools
with new diamond file.

Outdoor diamond files

I have two small diamond flat files.
But these are free from dandy. :)

I put wooden handles of juniper tree
on these.

Drill a hole in the block...
Insert these tang to the hole
with some Loctite.

Cut the handle and
sand it smooth,
oil on it with linseed oil.

Finally,
I make these leather sheaths.

Monk's bag...
homemade knife
and two diamond files.

I change leather sheaths's color
at nightfall.

My edge tools will be
always sharp.

Leather tie for Zebra pot

After getting off work,
I make a pot tie of
several leather straps.
And I varnish the sap of lacquer tree on it.

The pot looks like a Roman soldier. :)
If I make a pouch for it,
this package will look too big.

Velcro, stud, button, rivet...
What kind of binding together is selected?
Simply make a knot.

The rug of zebra's stripes,
and Zebra pot.

The cold snap hit the Korean peninsula,
temperatures in the central districts
hovered around -20 Celsius degrees.
The tap water of my house
doesn't run well.

A steamer for Zebra pot

I buy a stainless steel mesh ladle
at one dollar shop,
because it is suitable for
making a steamer
that is inserted to Zebra pot.
... Cutting...shaping... welding...

For managing my blood pressure,
I try to avoid high fat and calories food.
I become accustomed to
uncooked or steamed food.

Testing its function,
two steamed breads with sweet bean
are steamed.

Breads are well done
in a briefer time.

Glutinous, mellow and delicious...
I'll rest from hard work within a few days.
Then I'll use it in the open air.
